Overseas Highway Along the Florida Keys

A Tropical Escape on the Edge of America

The salty sea breeze blows gently across your face as you set out on a journey unlike any other—a voyage along the Overseas Highway, a 113-mile highway that leaps from island to island across the sparkling turquoise waters of the Florida Keys.

Starting in Miami, the route begins unassumingly on the U.S. Route 1. But as the urban landscape recedes, the road transforms into a narrow strip of asphalt, suspended between sea and sky, that weaves a path through some of the most scenic landscapes in America.

The journey takes you through Key Largo, the first of the islands. Known as the "Diving Capital of the World," Key Largo is a paradise for underwater explorers, its offshore reefs teeming with a dazzling array of marine life. Here, the famous John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park offers a first taste of the Keys' unique ecosystems, with opportunities for snorkeling, diving, and glass-bottom boat tours.

Further along, the Seven Mile Bridge—the longest of the 42 bridges along the route—reaches out across the open sea, delivering an unparalleled sensation of driving on the edge of the world. The expansive views of endless turquoise waters, dotted with tiny islands and sailing boats, are a reminder of the majesty and grandeur of the sea.

Each island along the route has its unique charm. Marathon, located roughly halfway down the chain, is a family-friendly spot known for its beautiful beaches and the renowned Turtle Hospital. Big Pine Key offers a glimpse of the Keys' native wildlife, including the tiny Key deer.

Finally, the journey culminates in Key West, the southernmost city in the continental United States. Here, the laid-back atmosphere, vibrant street life, historic sites such as Ernest Hemingway's house, and stunning sunsets at Mallory Square offer a fitting end to the highway adventure.

Driving the Overseas Highway isn't just about reaching a destination—it's about immersing oneself in the journey. Whether it's the stunning seascapes that surround the road, the diverse flora and fauna that inhabit the islands, or the unique blend of cultures that call the Keys home, every moment on the Overseas Highway is a chance to discover something new and experience the laid-back, tropical charm of the Florida Keys.
